Hello Visitor, thanks for dropping by!
I am Vikram and this is a space where I share some thoughts I have or have had over the years. You will mostly find my thoughts and ideas related to the Martial Arts and how it relates to all other facets of life.
The blog is called “Mundane” Budo with “mundane” being the key word. Mundane relates to the normal, commonplace, ordinary and everyday aspects of our life. In my experience, the concepts and idea one trains in the martial arts are drawn from and apply to these mundane everyday aspects of our lives. And exploring this is what my main interest is, in this blog space.
I believe “Martial Arts” is a synonym for “Conflict Management” (not necessarily conflict resolution) and this is what all of us do, all the time in our lives from deciding which turn to take to face the least traffic to how to pacify an overbearing client. Rarely (hopefully never) do most of us face the need to use the the physical aspects of the martial arts and even less so can we use the weapons one trains in the martial arts, in real life situations.
Thus, the concepts and ideas from studying and training the martial arts are more applicable in the challenges, little and overwhelming, that we face in daily life, these being mundane challenges.
I have trained one martial art, the Bujinkan system of martial arts, which can be collectively called “Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu”. But I love all the martial arts system in the world from all parts of the world. I have studied a lot of these to varying degrees, but not trained these. So, while I am not able to expound on these other art forms, I believe I have the ability and training needed appreciate and celebrate these. But I can speak with a little more authority on the Bujinkan systems.
You might not really find much on this blog about the physical and technical aspects of the Bujinkan. You might find a little over time, but not too much. There are other people (some with much more experience that I) doing that and currently I do not have much to add to that.
What you will find here are my observations on the points of intersection between the concepts of Budo and Indian (mostly Hindu) culture and traditions. How these concepts can be understood from Bharatiya culture or how examples of these concepts are present in our culture, this is what I hope to share with everyone here.
There will also be some fiction that I dabble in from time to time, on this blog. I love stories with a lot of action and the action is the key aspect for me, much more than characters and their development. So, you might find situation based stories here more than any other. Of course, from time to time, there will be posts relating to other things I love, history (this includes what is sometimes referred to loosely as mythology), wildlife, pop-culture (comics, movies, TV series). And of course, by dint of living in a democracy, I have my political opinions and there will be posts on my opinions and ideas that border on or delve into the political. That said, I am human being and do not expect consistency in adhering to this introduction. I will change with time, and so will the content on this blog, or not.
My deepest desire has been to contribute to an increase in the interest in the martial arts in India. By “interest”, I mean, sports, just study, training of systems, rediscovery of existing systems, adding to existing knowledge and the like. Also, when I mean “martial arts” I include all system from all parts of the world from all time periods. No restrictions anywhere..
Other details about me and my life are fairly irrelevant to this blog. This is all I have to share about myself and this blog, for now.
I hope to see you here often and regularly. I request your support in the form of views, recommendation to the posts and comments. Let the training mats always lead us to a better future, us and ours.
